FAQ Answers

When I joined the MTT society I thought I was supposed to receive the monthly publication IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, but I have not yet received any of these publications.

When you join MTT you must separately subscribe to the Trans. MTT. This is handled independently of the Society by the IEEE. You need to contact them through http://www.ieee.org to enquire further.

I am a recruiter / manager / head-hunter and want to contact MTT members. How do I do this?

You can't. We our members privacy. IEEE rules prohibit open recruiting at conferences.

RETURN

I would like to get a copy of a paper published in one of the Societies publications. How can this be done?

Copies of individual publications are available by contacting the Ask*IEEE Document Delivery Service and follow the instructions there. There is a charge for this service and first time users must register.

RETURN

How can I get the IEEE copyright form?

The IEEE Copyright Form.

RETURN

How can I get a copy of the MTT and IEEE logos?

The use of the logos is restricted to volunteers for official use.

Click to apply for a copy of the IEEE logo. (Use the back button on your browser to return here).

Click here for the MTT logo and then use your browser to save it.

RETURN

I need to contact an IEEE member could you please send me his/her email address.

We cannot do this as the IEEE member contact details are not available electronically unless the person is an active IEEE member as they have implicitly agreed to have their address posted on IEEE or IEEE society web pages. The IEEE Membership Directory (a telephone book sized publication) contains many member details unless they requested otherwise. Many libraries have this book and it is only available in paper published form. It is not available electronically and it is not possible to send details from this book via email.

Could you tell me where the International Microwave Symposia (IMS) will be.

Click on Event & Conferences in the navigation links.

How can my company become a corporate sponsor of MTT?

Individuals are members of IEEE and of MTT and there is no direct corporate sponsorship. However many companies have booths at the International Microwave Symposium. Membership is handled through IEEE See IEEE membership page.

RETURN

How do I join IEEE/MTT?

Membership application is handled through the IEEE. Go to IEEE membership page. You can join the IEEE and the MTT Society at this time. October to December is the time for IEEE membership renewal so if you are already an IEEE member you can add easily add MTT-S membership at this same time. Note that you must be an IEEE member to become a member of MTT-S.

If you are already an IEEE member and would like to join an MTT Society you can join during the annual membership renewal period or at other times call:

1-800-678-IEEE (4333) US and Canada

or +1-732-981-0060 (If outside the US)

Unfortunately, if you are an IEEE member you cannot join a technical society in mid year over the web.

I would like to write a paper and need information on how to do this.

Please refer to For Authors on the PUBLICATIONS pages.

I am interested in the publication called IEEE transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques. How much does it cost?

The MTT Transactions are available to members of the IEEE/MTT Society. Membership application is handled through the IEEE. Go to IEEE membership pages. You can join the IEEE and the MTT Society at this time and also subscribe to the periodicals of the society.. Note that you must be an IEEE member to become a member of MTT-S.

The publications of the Society are also available to Institutions but at a fairly high subscription rate. Information can be obtained from IEEE publications pages.

Are microwaves and cellular phones a source of cancer?

This is the topic of an on going discussion. There have been ongoing studies for several decades.  So far there has been no evidence that microwaves from cellular phones are a source of cancer. (Most of what is in the press confuses ionizing radiation with non-ionizing radiation). However the concern is there, and continuing activity is being directed at conducting trials. These necessarily involve animal subjects and only slight possible effects. The World Health Organization is sponsoring a major set of trials to provide definitive answers to the health issue question and an answer is due in about two years. For more information see the October 1999 issue of Scientific American.

How are microwaves or higher frequency waves detected/measured?

Microwaves and higher frequency waves can be detected as any radio waves. One way is to have antenna which when exposed to a field builds and voltage and current signal at the same frequency as the incoming wave. The voltage/current signal is filtered so only the frequency components of the signal around the intended frequency are transmitted. Then this signal is rectified to produce a DC signal which is measured. There are several other ways to do this but this is the most common.

How do microwaves cook food?

Microwave ovens produce radio waves at a very precise frequency and waves at that frequency interact with the polar molecules of water in all food items.  The waves make the water molecules oscillate. It is the movement of molecules and atoms that produces heat.  Food cooked in microwave ovens cooks from the inside out.

RETURN

What are the benefits of becoming a member of MTT?

Most people regard the networking opportunities with other professionals and access to technical publications as the main benefits of membership. We hold hundreds of events, conferences and workshops every year and have a wealth of published material available.
