Author Information - Transactions

How to prepare a manuscript for submission to the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques? Follow the checklists:

NEW MANUSCRIPT CHECKLIST

  1. Manuscripts should be submitted through the Manuscript Central site. Manuscripts can only be submitted as .pdf file. The file must not be larger than 1MB and no *.zip file is accepted. Please do not send any manuscript via email, regular mail, or fax, as it will not be processed if you do.
    * New * Multimedia materials can be submitted as supplementary files and will be published if the manuscript is accepted. See the section of “Preparing your graphics or multimedia materials” in Author Digital Tool Box for more information. Read Instructions for the Preparation of Multimedia Materials.
  2. It is mandatory to use the IEEE template (the two-column template listed under “Templates for Transactions”). The font size is specified in the template. TeX and LaTeX users must use scalable fonts rather than bitmapped fonts to allow easy reading of .pdf files on the computer screen. The Author Digital Tool Box provides additional guidelines.
  3. Selecting Manuscript Type: Choose ‘Original Manuscript’ for regular paper submission. Choose a special issue topic if your submission is for a specific special issue. Choose ‘Comment’ to submit corrections to your own published paper or comments on other authors’ published papers that you want to request corrections or clarifications. A comment proposing new analysis or technique based on a previously published paper should be submitted as a regular paper. As an example, a comment discussing the limitation of a previously published circuit analysis, describing a better approach, and acknowledging research sponsorship is a new research work and should be submitted as a regular paper.
  4. The minimum paper length for a regular paper is 4 pages, excluding the authors’ photos and biographies. Short papers of three pages or less should be submitted to the IEEE MICROWAVE AND WIRELESS COMPONENTS LETTERS. The mandatory overlength page charge is applied to each page in excess of 7 pages: $185 per page for papers having at least one MTT-S member and $230 per page if no author is an MTT-S member. Note that there is an option of Open Access when submitting the manuscript. If Open Access is selected, an additional open-access fee of $1750 will be billed if the paper is accepted for publication. Please see the standard policy of IEEE Open Access.
  5. You must reference your own work, especially recent journal/conference publications. Discuss your related publications in the introduction and distinguish the new results you present in your current manuscript from those found in your previous publications. While there is not a specific criteria that must be met, such as 60% new technical material, the reviewers are asked to determine if the paper provides “sufficient new technical material to justify a new paper” when compared to all previously published papers. This standard must be met by all papers, including papers that are submitted to conference special issues. Note that longer introductions and lists of references do not qualify as “technical material.” It is acceptable to repeat some results to properly explain the concept and to create a self-contained paper for the reader, but this should be done only when necessary. Please attach pdf files of the previous papers.
  6. If you have sent a similar paper to the MTT Transactions (including special issues) previously you must inform us even if it is currently in review or was rejected. You must include the Manuscript number of the original submission in the Cover letter. If it was rejected, please follow the additional requirements for Revised/Resubmitted Manuscripts.
  7. IEEE policy does not allow simultaneous submission of similar material to the Transactions and another journal or conference. If there are any issues with the policy please inform the editor.
  8. Authorship and Plagiarism: See the Publication Policy.
  9. Points of attention related to contents:
    • The Transactions generally requires that theory, measurements, and simulations be supported by careful comparisons. If, at the decision of the Editor, the component or circuit can be fabricated, measured characteristics must be included. All papers with theoretical contributions must have independent verification with measurement-based validation strongly preferred.
    • All papers describing a hybrid or monolithic RFIC should include a table that compares the circuit performance to the performance of circuits in the literature.
Authors should cite the most recent papers when comparing performance or characteristics of the circuit or technique to prior papers.
    • A photograph of any component or circuit presented must be included.
    • A photograph of the measurement set-up must be included in case of papers on measurement techniques.
    • The Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques will not publish papers that describe a single passive antenna or a passive array of antennas. Electronic systems or circuits that include an antenna may be submitted.
  10. Points of attention related to figures:
    • Figures and graphs must be embedded in the manuscript, i.e., they should be placed at appropriate locations within the text. So do NOT group all figures at the end of the manuscript, NOR upload figures as separate files in this phase of the review.
    • Figures should be large enough to be easily readable on a computer screen and on paper when printed out. The fonts in figures should be comparable in size to those in the main text (10 pt.) Examples of acceptable and unacceptable figures can be found here.
    • igures should use a high enough resolution to be easily readable.
    • Axes should be labeled with large lettering.
    • On axes labels, the units should be placed within “( )”, not within “[ ]”.
    • You should include essential information in the caption. If the figure is repeated or is similar to figures that have appeared elsewhere, please add “From [X].”, “After [X].”, or “Data from [X].” to figure captions, as appropriate, where X refers to the prior publication.
    • Whenever possible, theory and corresponding experimental results should be printed on the same graph for easy comparison.
    • Instrument screen captures are not suitable for publication and the data should be replotted.
    • The print version of the paper will be in black and white, but color figures may be used in the electronic version of the paper. Color figures will be directly converted to grayscale for the print edition. As such pastel colors (lime, yellow, etc.) should be avoided.
  11. Points of attention related to style and format:
    • IEEE has put together guidelines regarding editorial styles, mathematical equations, and references, please check the webpage here. It is very important to follow the IEEE editorial style in all aspects of your submission. Your paper will be REJECTED IMMEDIATELY without review if the IEEE style is not adhered.
    • Read the IEEE Editorial Style Manual and follow the guidelines.
    • Please list the full names of authors on the first page.
    • Please check the style of citing references in text and that all references are complete and in correct format (please refer to the IEEE Reference Guide). In particular, check the authors’ names and publication titles. Check the spelling of every author’s name. Do not swap the first name and last name of any author. IEEE publications must list names of all authors, up to six names. If there are more than six names listed, use et al. after the first author. For non-IEEE publications, et al. may be used if names are not provided. The title of references shall be in abbreviation format, e.g., “IEEE Trans. Microw. Theory Techn.” representing “IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques”. For the abbreviations of IEEE publications, please check Journal Titles and Abbreviations or Magazine Titles and Abbreviations as appropriate. For conferences and books, please refer to the IEEE Reference Guide.
    • The IEEE Mathematics Guide illustrates how mathematical equations should be rendered in a technical article.
    • A space should be placed between a numerical value and its unit.
    • For unit symbols, SI Prefixes, and abbreviations, please follow IEEE standards.
    • Insertion Loss and Return Loss should be positive numbers for all passive circuits.
    • Please check your paper for grammar and spelling. It is always best to have a non-author read the paper to check for grammar errors and unclear sentences. The spell and grammar checker in Microsoft Word works well and should be used. Ask a native English speaker for assistance if necessary. Papers with poor grammar will not be accepted until appropriate corrections are made.
    • Never use acronyms in the title or abstract of your paper, and use acronyms sparingly. Do not invent new acronyms or use newly invented acronyms.
    • Please do not use the same title for your conference and T-MTT submission.
  12. To further help you prepare the manuscript, here are the specific criteria reviewers are asked to check when reviewing a manuscript:
    • The Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques only accepts new and original articles describing significant work and/or ideas not found elsewhere in the literature. Is this work a new and original contribution in the area of Microwave Theory and Techniques?
    • The Transactions does not accept incremental submissions. After considering all prior work published by the authors, including the conference paper if this is an expanded paper, and others, would you characterize this submission as incremental? For example, after removing the previously published material from this submission, how much of the new material left is worthy of publication?
    • All related previous work by the authors must be referenced, even if it was presented in conference. Is previous work by the authors properly referenced?
Is the work of others properly referenced?
    • The Transactions generally requires that theory, measurements, and simulations be supported by careful comparisons. Do the theory, measurements, and simulations presented meet this requirement? All components and circuits must have measured results to verify the simulations; does the paper have this data?
    • Please comment on the organization, quality of the writing, spelling and grammar. Does this manuscript need grammatical revision?
    • How significant is this work?

REVISED/RESUBMITTED MANUSCRIPT CHECKLIST

    1. Prepare the following files:
      • Revised manuscript with no highlights, to be submitted as the main document.
      • Revised manuscript with changes highlighted in colored text (blue or red preferred), to be submitted as a supplementary file. Do not use the track changes mode in MS Word.
      • Document “reply to reviewers” listing all reviewers’ comments and a detailed response to each comment, to be submitted as a supplementary file. If you disagree with reviewers’ comments, supply supporting evidence. In order to expedite the processing of your manuscript, please be as specific as possible in your response to review comments.

Log in to the Manuscript Central site and enter your Author Center. Click on “Manuscripts with Decisions,” and then, as applicable, click “Create a Revision” or “Create a Resubmission” located next to the manuscript number. Then, follow the steps for uploading your revised manuscript and supplementary files.

FINAL MANUSCRIPT CHECKLIST

  1. Page Charges
Papers will be reviewed for their technical merit, and decisions to publish will be made independently of an author’s ability to pay page charges. However the publication of the accepted manuscript is dependent on the payment of mandatory page charges. Note that voluntary page charges of $110 (U.S.) per printed page will be requested on papers of seven printed pages or less.  The mandatory overlength page charge is applied to each page in excess of 7 pages: $185 per page for papers having at least one MTT-S member and $230 per page if no author is an MTT-S member. If the author’s organization agrees to honor the total page charge, which includes the voluntary page charges on the first seven pages plus the mandatory overlength charge, the author will receive 100 reprints. If the supporting organization honors only the mandatory charge, no free preprints will be sent. A Page Charge Authorization Form should be downloaded, completed, signed, and included with your final manuscript submission.
  2. Copyright and Clearance
It is the policy of the IEEE to own the copyright to the technical contributions it publishes. To comply with the IEEE copyright policy, authors are required to sign an IEEE Copyright Form before publication. The IEEE must assume that material submitted to its publications is available for general dissemination. It is the responsibility of the author, not the IEEE, to determine whether disclosure of the material requires prior consent of other parties and, if so, to obtain it. Do not repeat figures that were published in non-IEEE publications including conferences unless you obtain and forward a copyright release.
  3. Final Files
Please submit all final files through the “awaiting final files” queue in your Author Center in Manuscript Central. Please make sure your final package is correct and complete upon submission. Once you have completed the submission of your final files you will not be able to make changes until you have received page proofs from the IEEE. All files should have unique file names in order for them to export successfully to IEEE (i.e., Manuscript ID_FileDescription.xxx [TMTT-2010-0X-XXXX_Fig1.doc]). The files should include:

    • A Latex or Microsoft Word source file. This file must include keywords/index terms. If you choose to include bio sketches and photos, they should also be included within this file. Failure to submit a source file will result in publishing delays.
    • A PDF of your complete manuscript (figures, tables, and photos must be incorporated within the text). A PDF is NOT sufficient for publication. Please make sure to submit the source file detailed in Step 1 above.
    • Separate files for each figure, table, photo (including author photo), and multimedia materials (if applicable). Follow the guidelines in IEEE Graphics FAQ. The acceptable formats of figures are PS, EPS, PDF, PNG, and TIFF. High-resolution JPGs are acceptable for author photos only. IEEE Author Digital Tool Box provides additional tools and instructions such as Graphics Checker Tool and instructions on how to include multimedia in your paper. When using vector graphics (e.g., PDF), remember to embed all fonts. Otherwise, parts of the graphic may be distorted or missing when viewed on other computers, and the vector graphics will be rasterized with lower resolution.
    • Publications will be printed in grayscale, but color figures will be posted free of charge on IEEE Xplore. Except for improving quality to meet IEEE requirement, all figures appear in the accepted manuscript shall not be changed.
    • Page Charge Authorization. Please download the Page Charge Authorization form file from the Instructions and Forms link in Manuscript Central. The completed form must be uploaded along with the rest of your files. (By submitting your final files through Manuscript Central, you are acknowledging and agreeing to any applicable page charges this paper may incur. Overlength page charges are mandatory and are not negotiable.)
    • IEEE has moved to an electronic copyright submission system. Once you have submitted your final files, a link titled “transfer copyright” will appear in the “manuscripts with decisions” queue in your author center. Please complete it at this point.
    • IEEE now supports the publication of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) author names in the native language alongside the English versions of the names in the author list of an article. For more information, please click here.
    • Once the final manuscript is checked and accepted by the Editorial Assistants, it will be sent to IEEE Transactions/Journals Department for typesetting. The contact author will receive an email to proofread. Please respond promply within the time frame and make corrections if needed. IEEE does not send finalized proofs to authors unless requested by authors when making corrections. TMTT is a rapid-post publication. This means that author corrections are attended to and completed on the day they are received and the finalized paper is then sent to Xplore for online publication. This version then becomes the article of record, and for copyright purposes, cannot be revised thereafter.

REVIEW

The articles in this journal are peer reviewed in accordance with the requirements set forth in the IEEE Publication Services and Products Board Operations Manual (https://pspb.ieee.org/images/files/files/opsmanual.pdf). Each  published article was reviewed by a minimum of two independent reviewers using a single-blind peer review process, where the identities of the reviewers are not known to the authors, but the reviewers know the identities of the authors. Articles will be screened for plagiarism before acceptance.
