Professor Silvio Ernesto Barbin was born in Campian, SP, Brazil in 1952 and passed away on October 5, 2018. He received his BSEE from the Polytechnic University in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1974, and then his masters and PhD from the same school.
Initially he worked for AEG-Telefunken in Germany and Brazil. There he was the Chief Technical Officer for Microline RF products. He then served as the Deputy Director for the Center of Information Technology for the Brazil Ministry of Science and Technology. He also held the position of research scholar at UCLA and research professor at the University of New Mexico. In 1987 he joined the University of Sao Paulo and was promoted to Professor of Electromagnetics. His research focused on electromagnetic theory and modeling, reconfigurable/smart antennas, propagation and cognitive radio. He had received the Fulbright Award in the USA and the Alexander von Humboldt award in Germany.
Silvio was very active in IEEE. He was the chair of the Technical Activities and Strategic Planning Committees for Region 9. He was the Brazil Section and COMSOC South Brazil Chapter chair. He was also on the TPC for COMCAS in Israel and was on the steering committee for the RWS for the past 10 years. He contributed to many other conferences and meetings including a number of regional student events. In MTT he sat on several committees including the Proceedings editorial board and was a voting member of AdCom at the time of his death. In addition to the above, he has a very long list of accomplishments.
